5 things you didn’t know about destination spas!

1) Arrive early.

To maximize your luxury destination spa experience you’ll want to arrive early. It’s really important to not feel rushed or stressed walking in to your spa experience. Arrive early, enjoy a complimentary herbal tea or refreshing infused water and find that relaxation zone so that you’re mentally switched off and focused on you. Many spas have amenities to enhance your spa experience and help you relax ahead of your spa treatment. Take advantage of these. They are all designed to optimize your experience.

2) Don’t fret if you forget.

Have you ever arrived at a spa thinking about all the things you don’t have? Like underwear (if you’re wearing swimwear)? Hair brush? Hair straightener? Makeup? This list goes on. Spas are equipped to cater to your needs. Don’t race back to your room or home to grab what you forgot. Spas love to be able to positively impact your experience and would jump at the chance to offer you extra items you may need. Just ask!

3) Ask for a complimentary drink.

Most spas offer a complimentary welcome drink, especially if you are a guest staying at the resort or hotel. Don’t feel bad if they decline. If you don’t ask, you don’t get. You can calmly follow up with as ask for some herbal tea or fresh juice.

4) Birthday suits are encouraged.

It’s normal to go nude. Massage is usually done nude, but you are usually covered with a sheet at all times. Only the part of the body being massaged is exposed. You can keep your underwear on, but it might limit the therapist’s ability to work on your glutes if they need work. If you have a facial, you’re usually given a robe to wear in which case you can go nude under your robe. Of course, if you want to wear underwear you can. It’s down to your preference.

5) Tipping.

Most destination spa’s (hotel spas, retreats, resort spas or health spas) add a spa tip or “service fee” of 18-20% on your bill so you don’t need to add a top on top. However, if you have received exceptional treatment of course you can splash the cash and give your therapist as much of a tip as you wish!
